Styling Vignettes: Garden Roses

Even though we're moving into summer, flowers are very much in bloom here in Southern California. I still see a lot of varieties on my daily walks. We have a few flowering plants in our own garden but nothing too extensive, and most of them were planted by the previous owners. Our garden additions have mostly been succulents for their easy maintenance (our track record with flowers isn't the greatest). We do have a large rose bush in our backyard, it sits right outside my window actually. I like it when it grows wildly and doesn't get trimmed. Blush pink and magenta buds bloom all over it. We occasionally snip a few and bring them inside. Last month I collected a few of these springtime roses and had to document their beauty before putting them in a vase.

This vintage wood caddy was something I found while antiquing and I used it as a display piece for my craft fair last year (that seems like ages ago now). Normally it is in my studio holding crafting supplies but it seemed like the perfect flower carry-all. I love the wood tones mixed with the pink and green hues in these shots.

I hope this provides you with a little inspiration on this Wednesday. Have a lovely day!

The Life of Peonies, a story in pictures

These five buds made their way to our home through Trader Joe's. They were the last bundle of peonies available, possibly passed over by other shoppers since they were still dormant. At the time of purchase I tried to remain optimistic about the flowers opening up. Only hours after settling into their new home, they started to spread their wings. Over just a few days, these flowers went through magnificent color transitions, so much so that it was hard to believe they were the same bunch. Deep magentas to summery peaches to bright whites. For a few days I was captivated by these blooms, in awe of them each time I passed the dining room table. With every new stage I had to pull out my camera and document the beauty.

There is such beauty in life, in all the stages.

Happy Monday!

My Week Through Instagram: Week Twenty-Two

Happy weekend friends! Are you having a nice one so far? I have to say mine has been quite lovely. I have read, I wrote a couple letters yesterday (something I haven't done in SO long), I ate a yummy meal with my family last night. I'll be picking up my camera today and taking photographs. All the things that make for a nice few days. What have you been up to?

Here is my Instagram recap of last week, which was week twenty-two of 2012.

Sunday: These are some filler flowers that we picked up from Trader Joe's. I like filler flowers by themselves so these got put on display in a mason jar. They were a little messy and had a very Dr. Seuss quality to them.

Monday: We also scored these peonies from Trader Joe's, the last bunch. We just finally had to throw them away but these flowers were so beautiful all week. I was seriously captivated by them and how they changed colors and transitioned from closed-up buds to magnificent blooms. I took a bunch of pictures to capture the different stages and I'll be sharing them this week.

Tuesday: I did a DIY project this weekend and used electrical tape for the first time. I really liked it! These orange and purple colors were unexpected and I might try them out in my packaging more often.

Wednesday: Home Depot was actually selling flowers in these vintage-looking crates. This one is a welcome addition to our front porch.

Thursday: I sat outside in my backyard two days this week. It was rather warm but better in the shade and it just felt good to get out and see some sun. I worked and sketched out new ideas for upcoming projects. This old chair of ours is my favorite piece of patio furniture. It was my grandmother's and I remember it from her house when I was little.

Friday: I made up some scrambled eggs in the morning and was surprised to see this batch all stamped. An unexpected detail.

Saturday: I devoted some time to writing letters, something that I've been 'meaning to do' for far too long. It felt good to sit at my desk and just write. The only writing I do normally is on the computer. I used this old typewriter paper that has this amazing texture and these neat red lines at the margins. Now if only I could get my typewriter working then I'd really be set.

So that was a peek into my week twenty-two. What did yours look like?

Discarded but Still Beautiful

Hi friends! This week is still a little quiet here on the blog and for that I apologize. I am trying to be better but it is definitely a busy time with lots to do. I did not think May would be quite so crazy. Is your May like this too?

Today I wanted to share a few pictures I took while I was styling my Mother's Day polka dot vase last week. I picked flowers from our rose bush in the backyard. The light pink hues were the perfect compliment to the kraft paper and white polka dots and it was a sweet and easy DIY project.

Whenever you work with flowers, there are always discarded pieces that don't quite make the cut. You pick away leaves and wilting blooms so that the best specimens make the final arrangement. But these rejected scraps are still beautiful and last week I took a moment to appreciate the leftovers.

Sweet baby rose.

Even the discarded parts of life can be beautiful.

I think that is an important sentiment to remember as we hustle and hurry through life. Don't you? It is natural to discard and forget things but even then there is a lovely simplicity that we should all try and appreciate from time to time. The little things can sometimes be so big.

I hope this gives you a bit of pretty inspiration on this Wednesday. Happy day to you!

My Week Through Instagram: Week Nineteen

Happy Saturday all! Are you having a nice Mother's Day weekend so far? I just want to drop in quickly and recap this last week which was week nineteen of 2012. Week nineteen was a busy one for me and unfortunately the work kept me away from the blog, twitter and the internet world most of the time. But I still managed to capture my week through the Instagram lens.

Sunday: It was back to work after Saturday which was entirely devoted to my brother's graduation. Sunday was filled with wedding preparation and that included the making of these tags which got attached onto the pennants.

Monday: I spent the morning working on a DIY which involved these green glass jars. Beautiful morning light was streaming through my bathroom window and the jars caught the light perfectly.

Tuesday: A quick capture of the placecard display I put together for the wedding. I hung peach and pink ribbons from a branch and then the watercolor placecards were attached to those. This is the display just lying on the bed but it looked pretty impressive when hung vertically. I cannot wait to see pictures from the wedding.

Wednesday: Thursday was the big delivery day of all the wedding decor so on Wednesday I spent a lot of time boxing everything up and getting it ready for transport. Here are the programs and pennants getting ready to go.

Thursday: I finished my wedding stuff on time and headed to LA to drop it all off with the bride. David helped me celebrate afterward and we picked up lunch at a favorite burger joint, Apple Pan. I had to snap a picture to make one of my East coast friends jealous. These are the best burgers.

Friday: On Friday I shared my special Mother's Day DIY which shows you how to make a cute polka dot packaged vase of flowers. If you are looking to make something sweet for your Mom tomorrow, this project is quick and easy.

Saturday: At the end of the week my new Minolta film camera came in the mail. I have been eyeing this camera for a long time now and I finally ordered one on Ebay. I am so excited to start shooting with it and experimenting more with film.

So that was my week nineteen. What did yours look like?
