Font Love, Vol. XXVII: Learning Curve

Happy Friday everyone! Feels good doesn't it? I decided to make it a Font Friday and share one of my all-time, free favorites. I've been using this font for awhile so I'm not sure why I'm only posting about it now. Better late than never I guess. This freebie is called Learning Curve and it comes in a regular and a dashed version. It is a take on traditional, handwritten cursive but it feels more modern. Unlike some cursive scripts, Learning Curve is very legible. I like pairing it with skinny sans serif fonts like Quicksand. It is always a go-to when I want a little flair but not too much.

Learning Curve was designed by Blue Vinyl Fonts. The designer Jess Latham is also responsible for another one of my favorites Print Clearly which I use all the time. I think both are a great duo for any designer to have in their arsenal of fonts.

Font Love, Vol. XXVI: Made With B

Happy Font Friday! Today I'm sharing another free font by the talented designer Måns Grebäck. Two weeks ago I highlighted his other design Roskrift Clean because I loved its handwritten character. Made With B has a lot of the same charm as Roskrift but more sketched and shaded details. And it has some pretty fabulous swashes too which make the font seem more custom and hand drawn.

I found this inspirational quote over on Pinterest and felt I had to share it here. I love that it says that your writing is art. I don't always feel like mine is artwork but type and calligraphy and fonts sure can be beautiful. I think our group of Font Friday friends definitely proves that each week.

Have a happy weekend everyone. Do you have any big plans? I don't think I have anything scheduled so I'm not sure what I'll do with my time. I got the latest Uppercase Magazine in the mail this week and I have been dying to peruse those pages. So I'll probably relax and read that. Oh, and there are two Lakers games so that should keep me pretty occupied too. Have a great time whatever you are doing!

Font Love, Vol. XXV: Roskrift Clean

Happy Friday friends! The second week in January is coming to a close. Can you believe it? It's been awhile since I shared a Font Love post (since December) so here we go with our first pick of 2012. It's another freebie (for personal use) because a gratis font is oh, so nice. Today I want to highlight Roskrift Clean by designer Måns Grebäck. Grebäck is actually the designer behind a bunch of favorites including Feathergraphy, Channel, and Espesor Olas Half. Browse all of his free fonts here on FontSpace.

Roskrift Clean is actually the cleaner version (hence the title) of the original Roskrift which has a sketchy look. I like both versions but this one is newer and Roskrift has been a Font Friday favorite before. The reason why I was drawn to Roskrift Clean today was because it is a handwritten font (I dream about having calligraphy skills like that) and this week is Universal Letter Writing Week. On Tuesday blog friend Lisa shared this with me and now I'm encouraged to get a few letters out. Yes the week is almost over but any encouragement to send out snail mail is welcome. It would be so lovely if my handwriting would look like Roskrift here but sadly it does not. I guess my mail recipients will have to settle for my script instead.

So if you have a little free time this weekend, take a few moments and write someone special a handwritten letter. It's little things like this that mean so much to friends and family. Or as an alternative, type out a letter using Roskrift and pop it in the mail.

I have a super cool DIY planned for Monday. I'm going to be experimenting today and hopefully achieving some super awesome results. I cannot wait to share it. Spoiler alert: it involves mason jars. Yep, get excited! Happy weekend friends!

Font Love, Vol. XXIV: Dawning of a New Day

Happy Friday blog world and it's a Font Friday at that! The type love that we have going on here makes Fridays even more sweet. I have another freebie to share today, a lovely kind of the handwritten variety by designer Kimberly Geswein. Kimberly actually has a whole slew of handwritten fonts (see them all on DaFont) that are free for personal use. I actually recognized a few personal favorites as I was browsing her collection but today I want to highlight Dawning of a New Day. It is a simple script but perfect if your cursive isn't quite up to snuff. I know mine is lacking majorly so Kimberly's version is a great alternative.

As a matter of fact, all of my writing, print and cursive alike, is suffering these days in the era of computers. Now that I am out of school I rarely have a reason to write. When I do write it's usually in my personal sketchbooks and I don't worry too much what my writing looks like in there...hence writing that is becoming less and less beautiful. Is handwriting becoming a lost art? I doubt it will completely go away but I have so much respect and fascination for the handwriting of our ancestors. I cherish the delicate script on the back of postcards that I collect when I'm antique shopping. Do you find you are writing less and less? Sometimes when I do write for too long (like for more than 5 minutes straight) my hand starts to hurt. So sad! I used to have to write timed essays that were pages long in high school. I should work on my writing tolerance apparently.

Here is a little inspiration I created with Dawning of a New Day:

Also for the last two days I have been doing some major Photoshopping to clean up my blog and create new links, badges, and icons for easier navigation. I still have a few tweaks to make but the column on the right-hand side is evidence of my work. I think the design looks a lot cleaner and more cohesive. I would love to get some professional help one day but for now I like the adjustments and customizations I can make here on Squarespace. Do you like the changes I've made?

Happy Friday friends and have a great weekend! See you all next week.

Font Friday on Monday + A Giveaway

Hi blog friends!  I am so sorry for the lack of posting last week.  I was super swamped and today is my first relax day in awhile (notice the lazy afternoon post).  I had a wedding deadline on Sunday that took a major, super effort to get everything done on time.  I had Anthro work mixed in as well so the busy schedule definitely forced me to neglect some things, i.e. this blog and sleep.  The good news is that I got everything done on time and I was super happy with the way things turned out.  I designed some programs, escort cards, place cards, and table numbers for a wedding this upcoming Saturday all centered around the theme of rustic burlap.  The bride was such a joy to work with and her and the groom loved how everything turned out.  Ya!  But it all feels good to be done and to get back to blogging which I missed.

Something exciting went down last week on Friday and although I am a bit behind, I am posting my special Font Friday post now on Monday.  My type friends and I got together to create free downloads all using the font Skunkling created by Jason Mark Jones.  Jason originally designed Skunkling for the Design Your Own Alphabet contest hosted by Design*Sponge.  He won and has now turned his design into a working font (which you can buy for $25).  Or you can enter our first ever Font Friday giveaway to win Skunkling.

Here is a nice sampling of Skunkling in a variety of pretty colors.  Just think of all the fun designs you could come up with!

The giveaway is being hosted by Catherine of Design Editor so head over to her blog to comment and get all the details.  You can enter until Thursday (11/10) at midnight EST.  Also be sure to check out all of the great freebies by my font friends:

Kerry { Super Swoon }

Alison { Alison Owen Design }

Jenny { Hank + Hunt }

Wendy { WesWenDesign }

Laurel { Go Against the Grain }

Sofia { Brancoprata }

Jenna + Elizabeth { Little Bit Heart }

I also have a freebie to share!  I decided to create a holiday advent desktop wallpaper which features a Skunkling November and December calendar, perfect for remembering those big dates coming up.  As always, I was inspired by embroidery and cross stitch as well as vintage Nordic sewing patterns.

I have a handful of sizes to choose from so you can find the one that best fits your screen.

1280 x 1024

1600 x 1200

1680 x 1050

1920 x 1080

1920 x 1200

iPad

If you love Skunkling be sure to enter the giveaway this week.  There are a couple of ways to enter so you have a good shot.  Thank you for your patience in my delay of posts.  I'll be back on track this week, promise.  Happy Monday!
